As we prepare for Passover and read the Haggadah, we tell the story of a journey. We are commanded to see ourselves as if we personally left Egypt. It is an opportunity to imagine what the future might hold for our redemptive self.
For my husband Dan and I, a new journey began in March. We are in a new chapter, a new city, a new synagogue, a new community – a new life. Welcome to my world! I am now five weeks into the job and settling into Denver. During the first few weeks, I’ve met with various committee chairs, connect groups, religious school parents, delivered mishloach manot and attended many, many meetings within the shul. I’ve donned a dinosaur costume for the preschool, sang with Rabbi Shulman in magic minyan, attended the anniversary celebration, attended Shabbat services, witnessed Azamra and the beauty of the megillah reading and the energy of the Purim carnival. I’ve talked with many congregants on the phone and in person as I try to meet as many people as I can. I have found connections through my home town in Michigan, my adopted cities in Pittsburgh and Chicago and even an Altoona connection (where my husband was raised). I know I have a long way to go to meet everyone, but I’m working on it but know it will take a bit of time to make the connections. I truly love getting to know the community.
I’ve met amazing volunteers who display the heart of this synagogue. They are dedicated thoroughly to the work of making the world a little better. I know there may be more people who want to get involved in working with the refugees, making meals for those who need some help, gardening to donate hundreds of pounds of food to those who are food insecure or serve as Shalom Squad members to welcome new members into the community. These programs exist but there is a need for more volunteers to ensure their success. I’m here to guide and assist those seeking to get involved in these groups so please don’t hesitate to call 720-390-4434 or email me atamy@HEAdenver.org.
My weeks are filled with learning about the community, seeing the strengths that exist within the community and figuring out where to go next for other demographics that may not be as well served as others. I’ve been brainstorming with our team to create new program ideas for the coming year and to revamp some of the existing programs and opportunities both within and outside the walls of the shul. Over the next few months, new programs will be created and announced to enhance the ability of members to find their niche within HEA.
As I settle into my new home and new life, I will dream for the future and see what will ground us, motivate us and excite us as we continue the journey together at HEA.
