Join Us: March 30th Joey Weisenberg Concert with special guests Aly Halpert, R’ Yosef Goldman
.
When was the last time that a song changed your outlook on life? For me, it was in 2023 when I first heard members of the band Kedmah sing the traditional Iraqi melody for Ana Elekh, a piyyut (liturgical poem) written by the 16th century poet Rabbi Yisrael Najara, who lived in Safed. This piyyut is addressed directly to G-d. Here are the first few lines:
How can I escape your essence? How shall I flee before your Presence? When I flee [from you], I move toward you; In the shadow of your hand, I rise up in delight. Yahh, your kavod fills the world… (translation by Rabbi Adam Zagoria-Moffet, brackets added by Eitan Kantor)
The line that struck me from this piyyut is “when I flee [from you], I move toward you.” If I can succeed in getting this piyyut stuck in my head, I find myself noticing goodness, noticing G-dliness, in every situation. When I remember that it is impossible for me to turn away from the divine, I access a sense of calm curiosity about the divinity in everyone and everything around me.
It is because of Joey Weisenberg that I learned Ana Elekh. Joey started the Rising Song Intensive, the conference where I heard Ana Elekh. And the band Kedmah is on Joey’s record label, Rising Song Records.
Ana Elekh is only one of many examples of heart-opening music that Joey Weisenberg has brought into my life. Another example is Aly Halpert’s song Loosen, which became my grandfather’s favorite song in the last years of his life. Joey was the producer on Aly Halpert’s album and played bass on Loosen. One more example is Joey’s melody for “Shokhein Ad”. This recording, which features Rabbi Yosef Goldman as the soloist, helped inspire me to move across the country and change career paths, moving from government work to Jewish music. Joey’s talent for bringing together the right people to create moving compositions, recordings, concerts and group singing experiences is astounding.
I’m thrilled to share with you that Joey Weisenberg will be returning to the HEA to perform on Sunday, March 30, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. He’ll be joined by Aly Halpert, Rabbi Yosef Goldman and several other incredible band members. You can get your tickets HERE. This concert is made possible through generous support from the Alpert Family Memorial Fund, and all of HEA’s music programming is supported by our amazing Music Circle.
There are two ways that I would like your help. First, please attend the concert and bring a friend. Last year we had over 400 people at the concert. This year we anticipate selling over 600 tickets.
Second, please consider becoming an event sponsor ($360-$10,000). This concert is our biggest single fundraising event of the year, and your support is essential to sustaining the synagogue. Please contact Caryn Osterman or visit the event page to become a sponsor.
Joey Weisenberg’s vision for Jewish music is spacious - it has room for virtuosity and for the beautiful imperfection of group singing. It has room for old melodies and new melodies. And it has room for all of us. Please join me on March 30, and I look forward to connecting with you soon.
Shabbat Shalom!
